He's slowly discarding some of them, at times grudingly.  Yet, he
has to cling to some literal meaning, as that's the only way his
house of cards can stand.  Thing is, the mortar used is having
to believe literally.  It's like trying to use a flour/water glue
and have it stand up in a rainstorm.
