Years ago I had a friend (now dead) who had had a hysterectomy
years before I knew her. Her doctor explained to her exactly what
would happen in surgery, how she'd feel afterwards, etc., leaving
her in an it's-no-big-deal frame of mind prior to the big day. She
was Catholic, but, as is more traditionally the case with blacks,
her mother was a pentecostal of some kind. Louise was in her bed
in the hospital the night before the grand opening, when in walks
her mother with an entourage from her church. They started in
praying to gawd in the inimitable manner of all pentecostals, and,
more particularly, as only black pentecostals can do. "Oh lawd,
spare this child of yours from the valley of death through which
she will walk in the morning. Guide the surgeon's hand and lead
her safely through this ordeal" etc. By the time her mother,
friends in tow behind her, left the room, Louise was convinced her
doctor had lied to her about the seriousness of the operation and
her chances for coming through it, and she was terrified.

... Would it not be better to grow up rather than born again?
