heavy makeup? There were employment opportunities for
noncaucasians as "sidekicks." Tonto is perhaps the best
known, but topping the list for nationality-bending was the
Green Hornet's faithful Japanese valet/assistant, Cato, who

It never crossed my mind that Boston Blackie was "colored" (the
encomium du jour in the late 40s and early 50s when "Boston Blackie"
was broadcast). Boston Blackie was a character in a series of novels
and I have to confess I once read one. Penny dreadful is kind but I
recall no suggestion that he was other than a standard Boston WASP.
