Sartre
The turn down was 1964. I believe the reason he gave was that the process was too political--i.e., that they had not wanted to honor a person on the left, earlier. And he may have added that they were doing this very late, for self-serving reasons {so they wouldn't look bad over their previous course of (in)action}. It is worth noting that Camus, Sartre's bitter enemy had gotten the prize in 1957. And Camus's politics were quite respectable, middle of

Atheists, Agnostics and Humanists
Hi Chuck. Let's pretend you have refuted aagnosticism, atheism and secular humanism. Those mentioned above. There's the jump. You never addressed other religions. There's the second jump. Even if Christianity were the ONLY true religion, it would not follow that we are primarily dependent on "the Bible" --meaning, I suppose, your NASB Bible, taken literally. Unfortunately this view refutes itself. Paul of Tarsus, arguably a founder of Christianity did NOT HAVE--let alone depend on-- your Bible (Old Testament AND

Abortion is Love!
[Jim Staal] Surely Jim cannot doubt that there is/was such an operation: D E. Dilation and Evacuation. Fetus removed piece by piece. Perhaps he means he didn't *call explicitly for such an operation, but red-tape delays have contributed to the need for {or use of} such a gory procedure. It's actually safer, however, than induced miscarriage through 'saline procedure.' Best regards, Hal White.

Abortion is Love!
It seems to me if the mother's life is in danger, the choice of method (caesarian, saline, D E) is up to her. The last may well be the safest for her. I not a "fundamentalist", but a quaker. The rest you will have to decide. Peace. Hal White.

Abortion is Love!
And hold your, too, kiddo. The Torono Monthly Meeting (TMM) is unprogrammed and an member of FGC and FUM. TMM are presently deciding my membership application. Regarding SC, it's interesting that the original format has survived in what I'd call the "Bible Belt." I suppose if I had Calvinists on my doorsteep, I too would be saying some pretty snarky things. Has it ever struck you how odd it is that abortion issue, never addressed in the Bible, becomes the

I want to die peacefully and in my sleep, like *my* grandfather; not terrified and screaming like those who were passengers in his car, at the time. And no, it wasn't exactly *my* grandfather. Cheers, Hal.

Presumptions of the educa
Sounds worth reading. [Dave's list of pro-secularist books] Good list, Dave. Some titles against "secular apologetics" are worth mentioning: Kierkegaard, _Works of Love_ Weil, Simone, _Waiting on God_ {Fontana, 1959} Phillips, D.Z. _The Concept of Prayer_ {Routledge KP, 1965} Peace. Hal.

Are you saying, to stay in the 'food fight', only throw food? How do you see this Echo? Hal White

Case #3
Fine, so long as they're mentally competent. If you have a defensible position, why all the frothing at the mouth? Peace. Hal White.

Not a bad line. There is a bit of a twist in Romans. But there is more twist in the interpretation, thereof. Consider 13:1-4 excerpts. Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. But if you do wrong, you should be afraid, for the authority

Blue Genes.
Good point, Dave. Those who are irreversibly sick/dysfunctional and decide to end their lives have every right to do, provided they are mentally competent. I agree that one must assume that THEY judge their pain (OR whatever distress) to be beyond bearing. One cannot second guess them, provided it's not a passing moment of despair. And I think you alluded to the answer to the passing-moment problem: Let a few weeks/months pass and see if the person still wants it.

Case #3
As you may have seen, this and two other posts to David were not unsympathetic to his position. As for the 'mentality' of your opponents...I would just remind you of the adage that we are all in danger of coming to be like what we fight. In truth. Hal. PS. It would be interesting to hear any alleged Biblical justification for that position you say is Mr. Staal's 'you must live at all costs'. Perhaps Staal will oblige us.

Hi Martin. You inquired, [HW quoting Romans] The following was written by Marmaduke Stevenson in 1659, while in prison at Boston. He was about to be hanged by the Puritans: "In the beginning of the year 1655, I was at the plough in the east part of Yorkshire in Old England, near the place where my outward being was; and, as I walked after the plough, I was filled with the love and presence of the living God, which did

Those interested in 'reasonable discussion are always a minority-- even a rare commodity. I think the genuinely religious are not predators, but would agree that those who boast their 'religion', salvation status, or moral purity are often a scruffy lot. Do stay around the forums, since you seem to be able to discuss well and muster your facts. I hope you recover your upset. In truth, Hal.

Question
Why do you say it's "axiomatic." Do you think it's found in most ethical/religious systems? It's certainly *not found in most people's practice. Peace. Hal.

Blue Genes.
Here's a problem, though. What of the 18 year old who feels really despairing for a whole year? How easy should we make it? Put K's number in every college dorm? OTOH, assuming that Kevorkian has a one-year wait as you report, that's a long time, if I'm, say, hit bay a truch tomorrow and have some brain damage--so I can't remember much from one moment-- and spinal injuries causing intense pain. Here I might want out within days or

Who did you have in mind? I studied Nietsche very intensively, myself. As to handy advice. I have some concern that you homogenize things a bit. Do you recognize ethical disagreement? Is there, for instance, any general duty to be kind? Should one take, for example, any special interest in the pllght of orphans? Peace. Hal PS. Here's a practical example. I just saw the new video, "The Edge" with Anthony Hopkins. Rather good. Do you agree with Hopkins' benevolent

Question
So give some examples from your selection of relgions/ethical systems. Peace. Hal.

I see you get to make the rules of evidence in this discussion. Physical evidence applies to physical objects/events. I see you have no answer. And I'll bet not one that is backed by evidence from a peer-reviewed journal. Do you get to ask all the questions around here? In truth, Hal White.

Blue Genes.
Why not? This is English? Regards, Hal.
